This work is the culmination of 50 years of research. Takhtajan's delineation of plant families and orders drastically differs from what is accepted by other experts - he favours smaller natural families and orders where characters are easily grasped; classifications, therefore, are better defined and more suitable for studying the evolution of plant families. In an age of concern for the state of biodiversity, the smaller scale of species Takhjatan elaborates helps conservation biologists pinpoint areas of greater species diversity.
