King Cromwell? by Andy Harmsworth & Ian Dawson

A Key Stage 3 Depth Study

King Cromwell? An in-depth study about the English Civil War. It provides an approach to one of the most important but most problematic aspects of the Britain 1500-1750 study unit: the causes and consequences of the Civil War.

"This is History!" is the School's History Project's Key Stage 3 scheme of work for National Curriculum history. Through a combination of in-depth and overview units it offers a varied, relevant and challenging diet for the whole Key Stage 3 History programme of study. This book is an in-depth study about the English Civil War. Section 1 provides an innovative approach to one of the most important but most problematic aspects of the Britain 1500-1750 study unit: the causes and consequences of the Civil War. These topics are studied through examining the decisions which faced Oliver Cromwell - should he fight against the King; should he execute the King; and, should he accept the crown himself. The big task is for pupils to write their own biography of Cromwell - bringing these decisions to life. Section 2 is a shorter citizenship/political literacy unit exploring how the Civil War changed England's system of government. This Teacher's Resource Book supports all the key activities in the Pupil's Book including planning grids and writing frames for the biography task, copies of important sources to highlight and annotate, reference sheets, homework tasks and extension tasks, as well as offering detailed guidance on how to use 'King' Cromwell - as part of a comprehensive course
