1. Opposition to the Women's Movement in the United States, 1848-1929Representing opposition to the women's movement before and after the Civil War, popular antebellum authors and "womanist" activists such as Sarah Josepha Hale and Catharine Beecher, as well as postwar physician S. Weir Mitchell, progressive era muckraker Ida Tarbell, and others spoke out against the women's movement. Part 1 represents the issues as defined in response to the initial challenge of the antebellum Woman's Rights movement; Part 2 illustrates the adjustments required by opponents to women's rights because of irreversible changes in women's employment and education, and the increased presence of women in the public sphere during the Reconstruction Era and the Gilded Age. The writings offered in Part 3 reflect the response of opponents of feminism to the impact of women's expanded social, political, and economic activities during the Progressive Era. |
