Loss of a Life Partner by Carolyn Ambler Walter

Narratives of the Bereaved

Loss of a Life Partner Looking at the experience of unmarried couples and the loss of a life partner, this text includes both socially sanctioned and disenfranchised grief, highlighting their similarities and differences. The narratives of widows, widowers and bereaved domestic gay and lesbian partners are presented.

Although there is extensive research on loss of a spouse, predominantly focusing on widows, there is much less literature on the reactions of bereaved partners who have not been married to their significant other, whether or not the partners are of the same sex. This book includes both socially sanctioned and disenfranchised grief, highlighting their similarities and differences. The narratives of widows, widowers and bereaved domestic gay and lesbian partners are presented from a post-modern perspective, as texts provide a vehicle for discussing the unique ways in which bereaved partners move forward in their lives while re-examining their relationships with the deceased partners.
