How Governments Respond
An exploration of the different threats to sovereignty, including those that come from a widening net of international institutions and treaties, and from groups discontented with the political order. The contributions are from scholars who deal with a range of such challenges and responses.Sovereignty - the authority of a state to wield ultimate power over its territory, its citizens, its institutions - is everywhere under increasing threat today; and everywhere states adapt to these increasing limits on sovereignty. The limitations come from above, from a widening net of international institutions and treaties dealing with human rights, trade, investment, and monetary affairs, and below, from increasing challenges within states from long-resident groups discontented with the political order or new migrants testing the authority of the state. Sovereignty under Challenge deals with a range of such challenges and responses, analyzed in authoritative studies by leading scholars. |
