Men and Work in Britain
Exploring the specific areas of characteristics, attitudes to work, training, household work, and mental ill health, this book attempts to establish the lack of an empirical understanding of men in British, gender-based, sociological research. The aim of this book is fourfold: to establish that there is a lack of an empirical understanding of men in British, gender-based, sociological research; to examine men's recent experiences of the British labour market; to investigate the reciprocity between work and masculinity through existing theories of gender and feminism; and to provide a scientific account of men's work and male lives via an analysis of existing data. These male workers were identified in the 1991 National Child Development Study, and compared with male full-time workers and similar groups of women in the same study. Five areas of their lives were empirically researched: characteristics of male workers in NCDS5; men's attitudes to work; men and training experiences; men and household work; and men and mental health. |
