Almost 10,000 men die from prostate cancer in the UK each year. AS the male population gets older the number of men at risk of developing prostate cancer increases. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is an enzyme secreted by the prostate that allows the release of sperm. PSA can also enter the bloodstream from the prostate and its measurement is used as an indicator of prostate cancer. PSA is measured by a simple blood test which can be administered by a patient's family practitioner. In some countries, suh as the US, men are tested routinely when they reach the age of 50 years. This form of screeing for the disease has been shown to reduce the number of deaths due to the disease. Other countries are carrying out trials to see whether screening can provide such benefits. Clinical Guide to Prostate Specific Antigen is a concise overview of the history of the PSA screeing technique, the range of diagnostic assays available, and the use of the technique following radical therapy or surgery. Physicians involved in the care of men with prostate cancer will find it an excellent introduction to this valuable technique. |
