Child abuse takes many forms, physical, sexual, emotional and neglect. Identification is not always easy and this is especially the case in a busy Accident and Emergency department. Written from the perspective of the child's experience, this book identifies the different forms of abuse and gives clear guidance on what to do about it. It also shows how the child can be protected from the very moment abuse is suspected. The authors describe the roles and responsibilities of the statutory agencies and the legal framework within which child protection operates, helping nurses and doctors to understand the protection processes and how to protect any evidence. By describing the case conference and the court proceedings this book prepares the practitioner to take part in the post-abuse processes and possible court involvement and to ensure that the child is fully protected. Louise Humphries is an inter-agency child protection worker employed in a jointly-funded post. She began her career in general nursing, eventually becoming a child protection specialist nurse and completing a degree in psychology, then a Masters in criminology focusing on children as victims. Tim Gully is a qualified social worker and has worked for probation, education, NSPCC and social services as a practitioner and manager. Mr Gully has developed inter-agency projects for managing sex-offenders in the community and has worked as an independent consultant in child protection and dangerous offender management. |
