This work highlights aspects of ocular and general tumour immunology. Major chapters summarize the role of the immune system and how tumour tissue can influence various parameters (T-cells, NK-cells, HLA-expression, apoptosis), leading to escape mechanisms used by the tumour. The eye and the ocular adnexa may give rise to over 300 histologically different tumors, by far the largest tumor variety of the human body. The immunological behaviour of these tumors has been explored only in some cases. It is well established that the eye is an immune-privileged site in which cells that express foreign antigens escape immune-mediated elimination. Human tumors also create an immune privileged surrounding and thereby escape from anti-tumor immune responses. This book will highlight aspects of ocular and general tumor immunology. Major chapters summarize the role of the immune system and how tumor tissue can influence various parameters (T-cells, NK-cells, HLA-expression, apoptosis), leading to escape mechanisms used by the tumor. Beside this, the immunological behaviour of skin melanoma will be compared to choroidal melanoma, and basal cell carcinoma of the ocular lid will be compared to those of the skin. Ocular lymphoma, developing on the conjunctiva and the retina, also became a main point of interest in the last years. Finally, new therapeutic regimens, urgently wanted by our patients, are summarized, which hopefully help in the fight against ocular malignancies. |
