Small Area Estimation in Survey Sampling by Parimal Mukhopadhyay

Small Area Estimation in Survey Sampling This monograph reviews the problems and procedures of small area estimation. The first chapter introduces the basic concepts. The second chapter reviews some inferential problems of survey sampling under fixed population model and super population set up using prediction-theoretic approach. Chapter three deals with direct, synthetic and composite estimation procedures. Bayes and empirical Bayes (EB) estimation of small area parameters under random effects models are considered in the next chapter. Different ramifications of Bayes procedures (eg. estimation) in finite population sampling have also been considered. The following chapter addresses best and empirical best linear unbiased prediction of small area parameters. Other topics include:Bayes, EB and hierarchical Bayes estimation under mixed-effects linear models and applications of these results to small area problems; special techniques for estimation of population size for small areas; and application of Kalman-filter techniques in producing small area exposition and illustration from live data.
