A Labouring Family from Civil War to Second World War
This text attempts to portray the lives lived by the poor over a period of three centuries through the medium of one particular family. Whilst this is their story, it could, with minor variations of geography, be the story of thousands of families who worked the land until they lost any rights over it, who fled to the towns for work to find filth, squalor and ill-paid casual employment, but survived only to become 20th-century paupers in the slump of the 1930s. |
