End of the East German Economy by Phillip J. Bryson & Manfred Melzer

From Honecker to Reunification

End of the East German Economy A study of the end of the East German economy. Chapter 1 reviews the growing external pressure that perestroika created and the fatally insufficient response of the Honecker regime to that pressure. The economic performance of the East German economy in the final phases of the Honecker era is investigated in Chapter 2. The international dimensions of the combine planning system is addressed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 surveys the shortage conditions which characterized the GDR economy after the "turning point" between the Honecker years and the new era had been passed. In Chapter 5 the actual reform measures taken and the reform legislation enacted by the interim government is reviewed.
