Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Scale Effects in Rock Masses, Lisboa, Portugal, 25 June 1993
The proceedings of the 2nd International Scale Effects in Rock Masses, held in Lisbon, June 25, 1993. The text includes coverage of scale effects in the determination of the deformability and strength of rock masses.Genetic conditions and other natural phenomena, like tectonic and erosive actions, and chemical, thermal and hydrologic processes, bear the responsibility for the essentially inhomogeneous and discontinuous pattern of rock masses at both the macroscopic and microscopic scales. Accordingly, the results of in situ and laboratory rock mechanics tests, besides being specific, are dependent on the dimensions of the tested volumes, both in terms of mean values and scattering parameters. Scale effects arise in the rock engineering judgement in the extrapolation of test data to the real scale of the rock engineering projects. A more specific approach on the subject than the use of often unknown safety factors is required, from the improvement of our knowledge about scale effects being expected a better selection of the number, location and size of the tests, and a more accurate and less expensive solution of the rock engineering problem. |
