Critical Biography of Daniel Defoe by P.N. Furbank & W.R. Owens

Critical Biography of Daniel Defoe Daniel Defoe was one of the most prolific writers in English literature, however the canon of works attributed to him has become somewhat swollen. The first bibliography of his writings, published in 1790 listed a little over 100 works, but over the following two centuries a series of Defoe scholars between them raised this total to 570 separate titles. In the work, "The Cannnisation of Daniel Defoe", Furbank and Owens sought to illustrate how approximately half of the items attributed to Defoe have no rightful place there. This critical bibliography completes their project. It lists the works which they consider as certainly or probably by Defoe, clearly distinguishing these two categories. The entry for each work includes a full transcription of the title page and a physical description of a given copy of the first edition. As well as attempting to provide a precise dating, Furbank and Owens supply a brief summary of the work, trace the history of the attribution, and discuss the evidence on which the ascription is based. Brief appendices are also included in the book, sketching major political or religious controversies to which Defoe contributed.
