St.Katherine of Alexandria by Saara Nevanlinna & Irma Taavitsainen

The Late Middle English Prose Legend in Southwell Minster MS 7

St.Katherine of Alexandria This volume publishes a late-medieval prose version of the legend of St Katherine of Alexandria. The text is based upon Southwell Minster MS 7, with emendations where necessary from other manuscripts. The introduction discusses such topics as textual tradition, style and cultural context.

Saints' lives were popular throughout the Middle Ages; among women saints, few were more venerated than St Katherine, who possessed all the qualities and virtues appropriate to a bride of Christ. Her legend is typical of the genre, and shares many features with other saints' lives. This is the prose version of the legend; the text is based on Southwell Minster MS 7, which contains additions not found in other versions, with emendations where necessary from other manuscripts. The editors' introduction gives an outline of the tradition of St Katherine in England, with particular reference to the late-Middle-English prose legend, which dates from about 1500 and thus reflects an interesting transitional period in the history of the English language. Discussion of textual tradition, style, and linguistic and sociological aspects of the manuscript places the prose legend in a wider literary and cultural context.
