This text addresses such issues and hazards as flooding, pollution, deforestation and other ecological disorders. It examines the relationship between environmental degradation and poverty and uncontrolled population growth, and also highlights the roles of government and citizens in achieving sustainable development. The book aims to break new ground by relating environmental and ecological issues to sustainable development. This is a step forward in the efforts towards dealing with environmental problems in Nigeria.
The text is the product of a national workshop in management of environmental problems in Nigeria, held at Enugu on the 4th June, 1997. The proceedings are the outcome of the discussions, and the book covers four broad areas of concern across 23 chapters. Effective survival measures for environmental and ecological hazards in Nigeria are presented in the first section. In the second, poverty and environmental degradation are addressed. The third part discusses the roles of government and citizens in environmenal management and looks at the topical issues of environmental awareness in Nigeria and the relationship between population growth and the environment. The final section presents the problems and prospects of sustainable development and includes discussion of a case study on urban development and environmental management strategies for sustainable cities. The book closes with the prospects for resident participation in efforts towards improving degraded urban neighbourhoods in Nigeria. |
