Global Strategy - Local Responses
There has been a considerable and growing interest in globalization as a phenomenon. This book presents an examination of the relationship between the World Trade Organization and education, looking at the implications of two agreements since the mid-1990s.Over the past decade there has been a considerable and growing interest in globalization as a phenomenon. Education at all levels has been deeply implicated in the processes of globalization, partly as a product that can be made more efficient in the name of competitive advantage, and partly as a beneficiary of investment in a hazily defined concept of knowledge economy. A key player in the global economy, the World Trade Organization has had far-reaching effects on education through two major agreements: the General Agreement on Trade in Services, and the Trade Agreement Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. Each chapter in this book examines the ways in which WTO processes work alongside and within national education systems, and together they contribute to overall insights and theorizations about the processes of global governance, globalization and education. |
