This text is intended for professional and amateur mineralogists; museum curators and mineral collectors; geological prospectors and researchers concerned with mineralogy, mineral synthesis and materials science; and mineral resource specialists. This book is devoted to the mineralogy of Khibina and Lovozero, the major alkaline massifs in the Kola peninsular. The list of material for these massifs consists of approximately 500 minerals and exceeds that of any other material location in the World. The two massifs are the type locality for 109 new minerals, many of which have been described by the author. In the deep sectors of these massifs, the author has discovered hyperagpaitic pegmatoid rocks, which have yielded various new minerals readily decomposed by water and not encountered under ordinary surface conditions. The author gives a systematic description of hyperagpaitic rocks and all their characteristic minerals. Detailed attention is given to the physio-chemical conditions of formation of the hyperagpaitic rocks and their significance as ore guides and carriers (rare metals, phosphorus, alkaline salts, etc) and as an inexhaustible source of further new minerals. The book was first published in Russian by Nauka Press (Moscow, 1990). It has been revised by the addition of descriptions of another 19 IMA-approved mineral species. This book is intended for professional and amateur mineralogists; Museum curators and mineral collectors; geological prospectors and researchers concerned with mineralogy, in mineral synthesis and materials science; mineral resource specialists. |
