This work brings together 16 internationally recognized researchers from dermatology and dentistry to provide a contemporary account of ageing oral mucosa and skin. Both clinical and epidemiological considerations are presented, as well as a critical analysis of existing data and information based on human and animal studies. The book describes age changes in these two tissues (skin and oral mucosa) which have much in common but also have some important differences. The account of ageing deals with events from the molecular to population levels, and examines pathological changes associated with ageing. Existing data on fundamental tissue parameters, such as cell division, tissue turnover and wound healing is reviewed and structural and functional traits that might be altered with age are revealed. |
