This work summarizes experimental results that describe scenarios of the birth, evolution and death of spiral waves. It includes examples of the dynamics of spiral waves rotating in nonstationary and nonhomogeneous behaviour, or submitted to external fields or the influence of boundaries.Spiral waves rotating in excitable media belong to the basic spatiotemporal patterns in diverse nonequilibrium systems in physics, biology and chemistry. This book summarizes the recent experimental results that quantitatively describe fascinating scenarios of the birth, evolution and death of spiral waves. The role of various physical factors affecting the propagating waves is amply illustrated. Impressive examples of the dynamics of spiral waves rotating in nonstationary and nonhomogeneous media, or submitted to external fields or the influence of boundaries, are described. These experimental data are complemented by analytical and numerical analysis of corresponding reaction-diffusion models. The variety of the observed phenomena is interpreted in the framework of a simplified approach describing the kinematics of waves in the nonlinear dynamical systems considered in this book. |
